Imphal: The recent violence in Manipur has left at least 54 people dead, although unofficial reports suggest the death toll may be much higher. The violence has pitted the Meitei community, which predominates in Imphal Valley, against Naga and Kuki tribals who live in the hill districts. The situation has led to the deployment of nearly 10,000 soldiers from the Army and the Assam Rifles.

Despite the grim news, life is returning to a wary normalcy in Imphal Valley. Shops and markets are beginning to reopen, and cars are once again plying on the roads. Security forces are visible throughout the region, with troops from the Army, rapid action forces, and central police forces deployed in large numbers.

In the aftermath of the violence, 16 bodies were kept in the morgue of the Churachandpur district hospital, while 15 bodies were in Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal East district. The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences at Lamphel in Imphal West district reported 23 dead.

The situation remains tense, with sporadic incidents of arson and attempts to establish blockades reported in Imphal East and West districts. The situation is being monitored by security forces, who are responding with a “firm and synergized” approach.

In the face of the violence, security forces have been working to rescue civilians from affected areas, with over 13,000 people moved to safe shelters, including some army camps. In addition, five hill-based militants have been killed and two India Reserve Battalion jawans injured in two separate encounters in Churachandpur district.

The violence has underscored the ongoing tensions between the Meitei community and the hill tribes in Manipur. While life may be returning to normal in some areas, the underlying issues remain unresolved, and further violence could erupt at any time.

During the extensive conversation, Modi highlighted the inadequacies of these institutions in effectively managing escalating global conflicts, such as ongoing wars in the Middle East and rising tensions between major powers like the United States and China.

In recent developments, political figures in Maharashtra have advocated for the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb, situated in Khuldabad, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. Udayanraje Bhosale, a descendant of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament, labeled Aurangzeb a “thief and looter,” urging authorities to demolish the tomb.

Maharashtra CM also in favor of Aurangzeb’s Tomb Removal

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis echoed this sentiment, expressing support for the tomb’s removal but emphasizing adherence to legal protocols. He noted that the site is under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), a designation made during a previous Congress-led administration. Fadnavis stated, “We all also want the same thing, but you need to do it within the framework of the law, because it is a protected site.”

In response to these calls, Maharashtra police have heightened security measures around the tomb to prevent potential unrest. The site is now under increased surveillance, with visitors required to present identification and adhere to stricter protocols.

This controversy underscores ongoing debates about historical narratives and cultural heritage in India, reflecting the complexities of addressing historical figures’ legacies within contemporary society.
