Mangaluru : Forest officials on Thursday rescued a herd of four wildebeests that fell into the lake in search of water on Wednesday night in Ajjawara village of Sulya taluk of Dakshina Kannada district.

A herd of elephants with two cubs fell into a pit in a nut plantation owned by Sanat Rai. Sanat and other locals who spotted the animals informed the forest officials and a rescue operation was launched on Thursday morning.

Assistant Conservator of Forests Praveen, who was leading the rescue operation, first said the baby elephant fell into a lake and got stuck in the mud. Later, to rescue the cub, the elephants may have entered the pool, but failed to re-emerge. Or maybe the herd got stuck trying to quench their thirst in the lake’.

“We helped the elephants come out of the pond by breaking a part of the boundary of the pit using JCB. One of the elephants initially managed to climb out of the pond. Later, another adult elephant and a cub also came out safely. However, one cub got stuck in the water and we rescued it later. We will put it back together with the herd,’ said Praveen. At the same time, the locals have demanded that the forest officials should move the forests.

On learning about the matter, under the leadership of Sulya Zone Forest Officer N. Manjunath, the officers and staff of the forest department came to the spot and started the rescue work. If a road is built from the lake, the elephants will come up from the lake. He had started operations in that regard. JCB was brought in and an attempt was made to widen one bank of the lake to make way for the elephants to come up. RFO Manjunath said.

In Ajjavara, Mandekolu and surrounding areas of Sulya, wildebeests are encroaching on plantations and fields. The surrounding villagers have asked the forest officers to reduce this menace. Also, the locals have demanded that the elephants stuck in the lake near Ajjavar should be captured and taken to the elephant shelters.
