Akhilesh Yadav Slams UP Government for Absence of Full-Time Police Chief: Asks if Engines of Lucknow and Delhi Are Colliding

Lakhimpur: Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav criticized the Yogi Adityanath-led government on Tuesday, alleging that they were appointing acting police chiefs instead of a full-time Director General of Police (DGP) to further their own political agenda.

During a party event in Lakhimpur, Yadav took a dig at the BJP’s “double-engine government” slogan, stating, “This is the first time since Independence that the state got its third acting DGP in a row. Are the engines of Lucknow and Delhi colliding?”

Vijay Kumar, a 1988-batch IPS officer, has been appointed as the acting DGP of Uttar Pradesh, following R K Vishwakarma and D S Chauhan in the same position.

Yadav alleged that the appointment of acting police chiefs allows BJP leaders to manipulate law enforcement to their advantage. He referred to the Lakhimpur Kehri violence incident in 2021, where four farmers were killed under the wheels of a convoy, and stated that “BJP members have nothing to do with the law.”

Highlighting another incident, Yadav mentioned the protest by wrestlers demanding the arrest of BJP MP and outgoing Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who faced sexual harassment charges. He expressed his concern over the need for his party’s female members to stage sit-ins to seek justice.

Yadav also criticized the police encounters that took place under BJP rule, claiming that the police failed to present the pistols allegedly used during the exchanges of fire in court.

The Samajwadi Party leader asserted that the people’s enthusiasm during the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections favored his party. However, he claimed that the election results did not align with the response from the people. Yadav suggested that different outcomes might have been possible if they had effectively managed the booths during the elections.

Looking ahead, Yadav emphasized the significance of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, stating that they would shape the country’s future. He urged the people of Uttar Pradesh to overthrow the BJP from power in 2024, citing concerns that the ruling party might adopt strategies to continue ruling the country, drawing a parallel with Russia.

Yadav’s remarks were made during a gathering of party workers, where he voiced his discontent with the current state of affairs and expressed hopes for a different political landscape in the future.

In recent developments, political figures in Maharashtra have advocated for the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb, situated in Khuldabad, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. Udayanraje Bhosale, a descendant of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament, labeled Aurangzeb a “thief and looter,” urging authorities to demolish the tomb.

Maharashtra CM also in favor of Aurangzeb’s Tomb Removal

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis echoed this sentiment, expressing support for the tomb’s removal but emphasizing adherence to legal protocols. He noted that the site is under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), a designation made during a previous Congress-led administration. Fadnavis stated, “We all also want the same thing, but you need to do it within the framework of the law, because it is a protected site.”

In response to these calls, Maharashtra police have heightened security measures around the tomb to prevent potential unrest. The site is now under increased surveillance, with visitors required to present identification and adhere to stricter protocols.

This controversy underscores ongoing debates about historical narratives and cultural heritage in India, reflecting the complexities of addressing historical figures’ legacies within contemporary society.
