Bihar: Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of joining hands with the Congress and the RJD after breaking ties with the BJP. He alleged that Kumar was doing this to fulfil his Prime Ministerial ambitions, which he has every three years. Speaking at a rally in Lauria in West Champaran district, Shah claimed that Kumar had agreed to make RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav the next chief minister and asked him to announce when he intended to do so.

Shah accused Kumar of plunging Bihar into ‘jungle raj’ and claimed that the BJP was now disgusted with the former ally’s flip flops, and its “doors are closed forever”. He also said that Kumar had become an “opportunist” from being “pro-development” for his Prime Ministerial ambitions.

The BJP won more seats in the last assembly polls than the JD(U), but Prime Minister Narendra Modi kept his promise to back Kumar for another term in office. Shah said that Nitish and Lalu could not pull Bihar out of the vortex of backwardness and that it was high time that the BJP formed its own government in the state with a full majority.

Shah said that the “unholy alliance” of JD(U) and RJD was like oil and water and that Nitish Kumar could not stop demographic change in the border areas of Bihar. He urged people to elect Narendra Modi again in 2024 with a two-third majority to put brakes on such attempts.

In his speech, which lasted nearly half an hour, Shah also touched upon bold steps such as the surgical strike, the Balakot air strike, abrogation of Article 370, and the ban on the Islamist organization PFI.

Shah’s accusations against Nitish Kumar came at a time when the BJP and JD(U) were fighting for the same Lok Sabha seat in Bihar. While the BJP had won the seat in the 2019 elections, it was now supporting the JD(U) candidate.

The BJP-JD(U) alliance in Bihar has been strained in recent years, with Kumar expressing his displeasure at the BJP’s handling of the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens. He has also been critical of the BJP’s aggressive campaign against the opposition parties.

Shah’s remarks are likely to further strain the alliance, with Kumar already facing criticism from his own party members for joining hands with the RJD and the Congress.

The BJP has been trying to expand its footprint in Bihar, which has been a stronghold of regional parties such as the JD(U) and the RJD. The party won a majority in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, but it failed to win a clear majority in the assembly polls held later that year.

With the next Lok Sabha polls scheduled for 2024, the BJP is hoping to form its own government in Bihar with a clear majority. Shah’s speech at the rally in Lauria was aimed at wooing the voters of the state and sending a message to the opposition parties that the BJP was ready to take on the challenge.
