Following the recent bomb threats targeting 48 schools in the city, the Bengaluru police were thrown into a state of heightened alert when an anonymous caller claimed to have planted a bomb at Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Karnataka Governor.

The call, received at the Bengaluru police control room, occurred on Monday night at approximately 11:30 pm. Raj Bhavan, situated on Ambedkar Veedhi opposite DRDO, became the focal point of security forces’ attention as they conducted an extensive search of the premises throughout the early hours of Tuesday. However, the operation concluded with the declaration of a hoax, as no suspicious items were discovered.

Upon receipt of the threatening call, control room personnel promptly notified senior police officers, triggering a response from bomb squads, a canine unit, and additional police personnel. The subsequent search confirmed the caller’s claim to be false.

The unidentified caller allegedly used a mobile phone to make the threat, and the call was traced back to the Upparpet area. Authorities have successfully identified and apprehended the individual responsible, subjecting them to questioning.

A tragic incident unfolded on the outskirts of Surgapara village in Amreli, Gujarat, when a one-and-a-half-year-old girl named Arohi fell into an open borewell. The accident occurred on Friday afternoon while Arohi was playing near the borewell as her family worked in a nearby paddy field. This heartbreaking event has cast a pall of grief over the village and brought attention to the pressing issue of unsecured borewells in rural areas.

Borewell accident

Upon realizing the gravity of the situation, Arohi’s family immediately sought help. The Amreli fire department and 108 emergency response teams were quick to respond, arriving at the scene promptly. The rescue teams, aware of the critical urgency, employed various methods to rescue the child. A camera was inserted into the borewell to locate Arohi and assess the situation. However, the situation was complicated as soil continued to fall on the girl, making the rescue efforts more difficult. Even a robot was deployed in an attempt to save her, but these efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.

The rescue operation spanned a grueling 17 hours. Despite the tireless efforts of the fire department, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the police administration, Arohi was pulled out of the borewell without signs of life. The extensive operation lasted from 12:30 PM on Friday until 5:10 AM the following day. Fire Officer HC Garhvi, who was deeply involved in the operation, detailed the collaboration between different rescue teams. Once Arohi was extracted, she was rushed to the Civil Hospital in Amreli. Unfortunately, the doctors could only declare her brought dead, marking a sorrowful end to the intense rescue efforts.

Amreli Collector Ajay Dahiya addressed the media following the incident. He revealed that the borewell had been covered with stones, which were later removed by children playing in the area, leading to the tragic accident. An Accidental Death (AD) report has been filed in connection with the incident. In response to this tragedy, Dahiya has issued verbal instructions across the district, requiring that all borewells in rural areas be registered with the Gram Panchayat. He also indicated that a formal notification and an official order will follow to ensure such incidents do not recur.

Local reports provided a detailed timeline of the rescue operation. The 108 emergency team received the distress call at 12:46 PM and arrived at the scene by 1:02 PM. Upon their arrival, the team could still hear Arohi’s voice from within the borewell, which spurred immediate action. The fire emergency team arrived soon after and utilized cameras to monitor the situation inside the borewell. By 1:30 PM, administrative officials had joined the efforts and began supplying oxygen to the borewell to help the trapped child. Despite their unwavering efforts, the operation concluded with a tragic outcome.

This incident underscores the critical need for stringent safety measures around borewells, especially in rural areas where children often play unsupervised. The loss of young Arohi has not only devastated her family but also highlighted a preventable hazard that demands immediate and comprehensive action. It is a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking in seemingly innocuous rural landscapes and the importance of community awareness and proactive safety measures.

In the wake of this tragedy, there will likely be increased scrutiny and calls for more robust safety protocols to prevent similar incidents. The authorities’ response and subsequent actions will be crucial in restoring the community’s sense of safety and ensuring that such a heartbreaking event does not happen again.
