The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has taken stringent measures against the misuse of drinking water in Bengaluru. Recently, a penalty of Rs.1,10,000 was levied on residents and apartment complexes found using potable water for non-essential purposes such as washing vehicles and gardening.

Instances of water wastage came to light through various channels including social media alerts and routine inspections conducted by BWSSB officials. Despite clear directives issued by the board, many residents in areas like South-East, South West, North, and East zones continued to ignore the regulations.

In response to this negligence, BWSSB officials have ramped up enforcement efforts. From last Friday to Sunday alone, 22 cases of violations were recorded, leading to on-the-spot fines. Notably, penalties amounting to Rs.65,000 were imposed in the South East division, while Rs.15,000 fines were levied in both the North and East divisions, and the South-West division.

The board reiterated that the use of Cauvery water, supplied by BWSSB through borewells, is strictly reserved for drinking purposes. Any diversion of this precious resource for activities such as vehicle washing, dust suppression, and gardening is not permissible.

Furthermore, BWSSB has extended the ban on using drinking water for cleaning vehicles, gardening, building construction, operating fountains, and other recreational purposes within the city. Additionally, establishments like cinema halls and malls are directed to utilize only recycled water for their operations, emphasizing the importance of conserving drinking water for essential needs.

This crackdown underscores the urgent need for responsible water usage in Bengaluru. With water scarcity becoming an increasingly pressing issue, it is imperative for residents and establishments alike to heed the directives laid down by BWSSB and prioritize the conservation of this vital resource for sustainable living.
