Mangaluru: A group of seers representing various Hindu mutts in Dakshina Kannada district have strongly voiced their opposition to the Karnataka government’s decision to repeal the state’s anti-conversion law and the cow slaughter Prevention Act. The seers expressed their concerns during a meeting held in Mangaluru on Friday, responding to the recent discussions by the newly elected state government regarding the repeal of these laws.

During the conference, attended by ten seers from different mutts, the religious leaders urged Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivkumar to reconsider their stance on changing the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, commonly known as the ‘Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act’.

Sri Gurudevananda Swamiji of Odiyoor conveyed his disappointment with the government’s decision, stating that it would deeply hurt the sentiments of the entire Hindu community. He appealed to the authorities to respect the beliefs of the Hindu community, emphasizing that proceeding with the repeal would be detrimental to their sentiments. Furthermore, he warned that the seers are prepared to stage a hunger strike if the government persists with its decision.

Sri Rajashekharananda Swamiji of the Vajradehi mutt declared that they would challenge the government’s move to repeal the laws in the Supreme Court, seeking to safeguard the rights and interests of the Hindu community. He also called upon the police not to target Hindu activists by reopening old cases of “moral policing” under the guise of the newly formed anti-communal wing of the force.

In response to the seers’ opposition, the state government of Karnataka affirmed on July 3 that it intends to introduce a bill to repeal the anti-conversion law during the upcoming legislative session.

The religious leaders’ protest against the potential repeal of the anti-conversion law and the cow slaughter Prevention Act reflects the concerns and sentiments of the Hindu community in Dakshina Kannada district. The matter is expected to gain further attention as the state government proceeds with its decision, potentially leading to legal battles in the Supreme Court.

a prominent doctor in Bengaluru‘s western region, Dr. Nikhil Gopalakrishnan, was apprehended by officials from the Central Crime Branch (CCB) on charges related to the procurement and consumption of hydro ganja. This arrest sheds light on the pervasive issue of substance abuse and its intricate networks in the city.

The CCB’s Anti Narcotics Wing (ANW) conducted a thorough investigation leading to the arrest of Dr. Gopalakrishnan. The authorities received concrete information suggesting his involvement in the acquisition of hydro ganja, which was reportedly dispatched to him via international mail from the Netherlands. Initial inquiries indicate that Dr. Gopalakrishnan purportedly utilized the contraband solely for personal consumption. However, the investigation is ongoing to ascertain the means through which he procured the substance and identify potential collaborators in his activities.

Dr. Gopalakrishnan’s origins trace back to Tamil Nadu, and he has been residing in the Yeshwantpur area of northern Bengaluru. This incident underscores the prevalence of substance abuse across various demographics within the city, irrespective of professional backgrounds or residential locations.

This arrest also draws attention to the broader issue of international connections in drug-related activities. Notably, the case of an international hacker known as Srikrishna, alias Sriki, who was previously apprehended for similar offenses involving hydro ganja procurement using cryptocurrencies earned through hacking government websites, exemplifies the transnational nature of such illicit operations.

In parallel investigations, the ANW has successfully apprehended three foreign nationals involved in drug peddling activities, seizing a substantial quantity of contraband valued at Rs 2.3 crore. The arrested individuals, identified as Chainasa Cyprilan Okoye and Kalu Chukwa from Nigeria, along with Emmanuel Kwasy from Ghana, highlight the diverse origins of individuals implicated in drug-related offenses within Bengaluru.

These arrests underscore the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in combating the proliferation of narcotics within the city. The peddlers, exploiting vulnerable segments of society such as college students, operate within a complex network that spans international borders. Efforts to dismantle these networks require diligent investigation and collaboration among various agencies.

The CCB’s seizure of MDMA crystals, ecstasy pills, and hydro ganja, along with the confiscation of mobile devices used by the suspects, reflects a concerted effort to disrupt the supply chain of illicit substances and bring perpetrators to justice.

As the investigations progress, it becomes imperative for authorities to not only apprehend individuals involved in drug-related activities but also implement preventive measures and rehabilitation programs to address the root causes of substance abuse in Bengaluru. The collective efforts of law enforcement agencies, coupled with community engagement initiatives, are essential in creating a safer and healthier environment for all residents of the city.
