Jaya Prada Sentenced: 6 Months Jail, Rs 5,000 Fine

Jaya Prada: A prominent Chennai court has handed down a sentence to the esteemed actor and seasoned politician, Jaya Prada, in connection with a case originating from 1991, as reported by sources.

According to available reports, Jaya Prada has also been ordered to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 in relation to this case.

Jaya Prada has been an active participant in politics since 1994 and has held positions as a Member of Parliament in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. At present, she maintains her affiliation with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), having previously been associated with the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

The conviction stems from a case dating back to 1991, centered around the failure to remit Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) funds to the employees of a theater that she co-ran alongside her brother Raj Babu, according to a report by India Today.

The lawsuit, originating from 1991, is linked to a now-defunct theater that was operated by Jaya Prada and her siblings.

Furthermore, as reported by Bar & Bench, Jaya Prada’s two brothers have each been subjected to fines of Rs 5,000 as well.

The Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) lodged a complaint against the accused parties for neglecting to disburse a sum of Rs 8,17,794 from the years 1991 to 2002. Subsequently, the court has mandated that the accused parties settle the outstanding amount with the complainant, as per the findings by India Today.

Bar & Bench disclosed that although the theater had been deducting contributions from the employees’ salaries, these funds were not being deposited with the Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC).

In accordance with the ESIC’s account, the management of the now defunct cinema theater, under Jayaprada’s ownership, had been deducting the Employee State Insurance (ESI) contributions from the employees’ earnings, yet had failed to forward these funds to the state insurance corporation. This scenario falls under Section 40 of the ESI Act, whereby the principal employer is responsible for both the employer and employees’ contributions. The principal employer possesses the authority to recover the employees’ share of contributions from their wages.

Within the pronouncement of the verdict, the presiding judge noted that the “offense committed is grave and reprehensible,” and therefore, no leniency could be entertained.

Supreme Court to Review Kolkata Doctor’s Rape and Murder Case on March 17
Supreme Court of India

The Supreme Court of India, under the leadership of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, is scheduled to review the suo motu case concerning the rape and murder of a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on March 17.

In August of the previous year, the Court addressed the tragic incident, emphasizing the critical need for enhanced safety measures for medical professionals nationwide. The Bench appealed to protesting doctors to resume their duties, assuring them of protection against any punitive actions related to their participation in the protests.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been actively probing the case. In October, they filed the initial charge sheet against Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer associated with Kolkata Police, implicating him in the heinous crime. The CBI‘s investigation suggests a potential broader conspiracy, highlighting concerns about evidence tampering during the early stages when the Kolkata Police were overseeing the investigation. Subsequently, two additional arrests were made: Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the former Station House Officer of Tala Police Station. Both are accused of obstructing the investigation and tampering with evidence.

The upcoming hearing on March 17 will further address these developments, underscoring the Supreme Court‘s commitment to ensuring justice and reinforcing workplace safety for medical professionals across the country.

Note: For a comprehensive understanding, readers are encouraged to refer to official Supreme Court records and updates from the Central Bureau of Investigation.
