In a passionate speech during a parliamentary session, TMC MP Mahua Moitra vociferously criticized the ruling BJP for their decision to suspend her in the previous Lok Sabha session. Moitra asserted that this attempt to silence her voice backfired dramatically, resulting in significant political consequences for the BJP, including the loss of 63 MPs. She made it clear that the BJP would no longer be able to treat the opposition in the same manner, emphasizing the strengthened resolve and unity of her party and allies.

Mahua Moitra’s Fiery Rebuttal to BJP

Reflecting on the events of the last session, Moitra remarked, “The last time I stood in this house, I was denied the chance to speak. The ruling party paid a steep price for suppressing the voice of just one MP. In their bid to silence me, the electorate responded by silencing them, leading to a loss of 63 BJP MPs.” This statement set a defiant tone, highlighting the consequences of the BJP’s actions and the public’s response.

Moitra was also critical of the installation of the Sengol in Parliament, describing it as an archaic symbol of monarchy that has no place in a democratic institution. She pointed out that the BJP’s governance, which she termed ‘raj tantra’, has been diminished by the ‘lok tantra’ of the Indian populace. She also highlighted the instability within the BJP’s ranks, which she claimed relies on multiple allies with a history of inconsistent political stances. “This government is not stable. It is dependent on allies with questionable loyalty. We are 234 warriors this time, having walked through fire. You will not be able to treat us as you did before,” she declared.

Moitra took the opportunity to criticize the President’s address, particularly its omission of crucial issues affecting the North-East. She noted, “The President’s address covered six themes, but despite the budget for the North-East increasing fourfold, there was no mention of Manipur. During the election campaign, the Prime Minister spoke about various topics but did not once mention Manipur. We need action in the East, not just words.”

Addressing the topic of women’s empowerment, Moitra accused the BJP of failing to deliver on its promises. She argued that the delay in implementing reservations for women in Parliament was a sign of the BJP’s fear of strong female leadership. “This claim of women empowerment is utterly false. There are only 74 women MPs currently, with the BJP accounting for just 30 out of 240. In contrast, the TMC had 37 percent women MPs last term and has increased this to 38 percent now. While we have empowered three lakh ‘lakhpati didis’, the BJP is focused on creating ‘arabpati dadas’.”

On the issue of Kashmir, Moitra questioned the effectiveness of the abrogation of Article 370. “If the abrogation was truly beneficial, why didn’t the BJP field candidates in constituencies like Baramulla, Srinagar, and Anantnag-Rajouri? Ladakh was downgraded, and five years later, its people are still waiting for inclusion in the Sixth Schedule. Consequently, Ladakhis relegated the BJP to third place,” she argued.

Moitra also accused the Election Commission of bias, stating that the opposition won despite the Commission’s partiality. “We emerged victorious not because of the Election Commission but despite it. Commissioners ignored blatant violations of the Model Code of Conduct by the ruling party and the Prime Minister. This election will be remembered for the Election Commission’s eagerness to comply with the ruling party. Ultimately, the voters took control and said, ‘enough is enough’.”

Concluding her speech, Moitra reflected on her personal sacrifices and the broader political scenario. “People often say to me, ‘Mahua, you lost so much – your membership, your house.’ Yes, I also lost my uterus, but what I gained is far more significant: freedom from fear,” she said. Moitra’s comments referred to her hysterectomy last year, coinciding with her eviction from her residence following her suspension from the Lok Sabha.

On April 12, 2025, a series of earthquakes rattled parts of India and several neighboring Asian countries, leaving communities on edge. From the Himalayan foothills to coastal regions, the tremors have sparked concern, with residents sharing their experiences and authorities rushing to assess the damage. Here’s a closer look at the unfolding situation.

Where Earthquakes Hit India

The quakes, ranging in intensity, were felt across northern India, including states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, as well as in neighboring nations such as Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. Early reports suggest the epicenter may have been near the India-Nepal border, a region known for its tectonic activity due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates. While exact magnitudes are still being confirmed, the shaking was strong enough to jolt people from their homes and offices.

In India, cities like Lucknow and Patna reported mild tremors, with some residents feeling the ground sway for a few seconds. Across the border, Kathmandu and Dhaka experienced similar disturbances, raising fears of aftershocks. “It felt like the floor was moving under my feet,” said a local from Bihar, capturing the sudden panic that gripped the region.

Impact on Communities

So far, no major casualties or widespread destruction have been reported, but the situation remains fluid. In rural areas, where infrastructure is often less resilient, cracks have appeared in some homes, and power outages were noted in isolated spots. Authorities are urging people to stay cautious, especially in earthquake-prone zones like the Himalayas.

Social media is buzzing with videos of swaying buildings and panicked evacuations, while local officials are conducting safety checks. Schools and offices in affected areas have been closed as a precaution, and emergency response teams are on standby. “We’re prepared to act if things worsen,” a disaster management official stated, emphasizing the need for vigilance.

The Indian subcontinent sits on a seismic hotspot, making earthquakes a recurring concern. Experts link this recent activity to the ongoing tectonic shifts along the Himalayan fault line, which has triggered significant quakes in the past, like the 2015 Nepal earthquake. While the current tremors appear less severe, they serve as a reminder of nature’s unpredictability.

Trending discussions online highlight how climate change and geological stress might be amplifying such events, though this remains inconclusive. Residents are being advised to follow safety drills—drop, cover, and hold on—and avoid old or weak structures until cleared by experts.

As seismologists analyze data, the focus is on predicting aftershocks and ensuring public safety. The Indian Meteorological Department and regional agencies are working together to issue updates. For now, communities are holding their breath, hoping the worst is over.
