New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday held a high-level meeting to review the Covid-related situation and public health preparedness.

India reported 1,134 new cases of Covid-19 while active cases rose to 7,026, according to Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday. The total death toll has risen to 5,30,813.

Five deaths were reported in Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat and Maharashtra with one death each from Kerala, data updated at 8 am said.

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 1.09 percent while the weekly positivity was pegged at 0.98 percent. The number of Covid cases recorded is 4.46 crore (4,46,98,118). Active cases now account for 0.02 percent of total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has been recorded at 98.79 percent, the ministry said.

The Union Health Ministry had last week written to six states reporting an increase in Covid cases, suggesting that possible local spread could lead to the increase in cases.

“Some states are reporting high number of cases, which indicates local spread of infection and need to follow a risk assessment based approach to prevent infection,” said Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan after writing to Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.

“It is essential for the state to maintain strict vigilance and take proactive measures if necessary in any areas of concern to control the spread of infection,” Bhushan said.

In a fiery speech at an election rally in Agra, PM Narendra Modi didn’t mince words as he lambasted the Congress and the INDIA bloc for what he described as systematic and organized plunder. Pointing fingers directly at the opposition, Modi reiterated his stance against their alleged tendencies to exploit the people, both during their lifetimes and even after. His speech, laden with political jabs and warnings, resonated with the audience gathered at the Kothi Meena market.

Taking a swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Modi mocked the party’s approach, particularly highlighting Gandhi’s rhetoric about using an “X-ray machine” to scrutinize the belongings of ordinary citizens. The reference to scrutinizing wardrobes struck a chord with the crowd, highlighting the absurdity of such propositions.

Accusing the INDIA bloc of planning to usurp people’s ancestral property, Modi raised concerns about their intentions to diminish citizens’ inheritance. He appealed to the gathering, questioning whether they would allow such actions to unfold, emphasizing the need to stand against any attempts at confiscation.

Further delving into the political landscape, Modi accused the Congress of conspiring to introduce religion-based reservations while neglecting the rights of SC/ST and OBC communities. He warned against the dangers of such maneuvers, citing past instances where similar attempts were thwarted by constitutional measures.

Modi’s discourse extended to the issue of defense manufacturing, where he emphasized the importance of indigenous production over reliance on international arms dealers. His commitment to self-sufficiency in defense capabilities drew applause from the crowd, underscoring the significance of autonomy in safeguarding national interests.

In conclusion, PM Modi’s speech in Agra resonated not only with the immediate audience but also reverberated across the political spectrum. His staunch stance against corruption, exploitation, and external dependencies struck a chord with voters, solidifying his position as a formidable leader dedicated to the welfare and sovereignty of the nation.

Amidst his speech, Gadkari suddenly fainted, prompting swift action from the security personnel present at the event. They immediately rushed to his aid, carrying him off-stage to provide medical attention.

The unexpected episode caused concern among the attendees, but Gadkari managed to regain consciousness after a few minutes. Remarkably, he displayed resilience and determination by returning to the stage to complete his speech, demonstrating his commitment to his political duties.

Following the incident, Gadkari reassured the public about his well-being through a post on social media platform X. Pro-Khalistan leader Amritpal Singh, currently incarcerated in Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act, might make a significant political move by entering the electoral arena. His lawyer, Rajdev Singh Khalsa, disclosed that during a recent meeting at the central jail, he proposed that Singh consider contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Khadoor Sahib. This suggestion, Khalsa believes, could serve as a referendum on Singh’s arrest by the AAP-led Mann government.

Khalsa shared insights from his conversation with Singh, stating, “He expressed his willingness to participate in these polls.” Plans are underway to initiate the nomination process once formal proceedings commence.

The decision, however, seems to lack familial consensus. Tarseem Singh, Amritpal Singh’s father, expressed surprise regarding the prospect of his son’s electoral bid. “We haven’t discussed this matter, and we’re not inclined towards him entering the political fray. Only after our meeting with him can we offer a more definitive stance,” he remarked.

In a separate development, speculation surrounds Balkaur Singh, the father of the late Sidhu Moosewala, contemplating an independent candidacy in the Bathinda constituency. Although no official statement has been issued by Balkaur or his family, insider sources suggest his potential entry into the electoral race.

Should Balkaur opt to contest, he would challenge incumbent Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MP and former Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal, alongside candidates from the Congress, AAP, and BJP. Initially approached by the Congress, Balkaur expressed reluctance to pursue a political career.

Notably, Sidhu Moosewala’s previous foray into politics during the 2022 assembly elections saw him represent the Congress in Mansa, where he faced defeat at the hands of AAP’s Vijay Singla.

The looming Lok Sabha elections promise to be a battleground of ideologies and aspirations, with potential contenders like Amritpal Singh and Balkaur Singh poised to make waves in Punjab’s political landscape. As the electoral drama unfolds, all eyes are set on the unfolding narratives and their implications for the region’s socio-political dynamics. Stay tuned for further updates.
