New Delhi: The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has strongly condemned the persistent violence in Manipur and called upon the state government, local administration, police, military, and central agencies to take immediate action to restore peace. The RSS’s appeal comes at a time when both the opposition and a significant portion of the Manipuri population are demanding a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the ongoing violence.

In an official statement released on the organization’s Twitter handle, RSS’s General Secretary, Dattatreya Hosabale, expressed deep concern over the escalating violence that has plagued Manipur for the past 45 days. The violence originated after a protest rally during the Lai Haraoba festival in Churachandpur on May 3 and has since continued unabated. Hosabale denounced the violence and uncertainty that has disrupted the peaceful coexistence and cooperation among Manipur’s diverse communities.

The RSS stands in solidarity with the displaced individuals and victims of the Manipur crisis, numbering over 50,000 during this period of immense suffering, according to Hosabale. The organization firmly believes that violence and hatred have no place in a democratic society and that problems can only be resolved through peaceful dialogue and mutual understanding.

Hosabale emphasized the urgent need to rebuild trust among the communities involved, acknowledging that the crisis requires comprehensive efforts from both the Meitei and Kuki communities. Addressing the sense of insecurity and helplessness among the Meiteis, as well as the genuine concerns of the Kuki community, is crucial to finding a resolution, he added.

The RSS extended its appeal for peace to the entire civil society, political groups in Manipur, and the general public, urging them to take all necessary initiatives to end the chaotic and violent situation. The organization emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of human lives and establishing lasting peace in the state. According to conservative estimates, the ongoing violence in Manipur has already claimed over 100 lives and caused extensive damage to public and government property.

Meanwhile, the Congress party criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “continuing silence” on the violence in Manipur. Jairam Ramesh, Congress general secretary, accused the RSS of issuing the appeal for peace only after 45 days and alleged that the organization’s divisive ideology and polarizing activities were reshaping the diverse nature of the Northeast, with Manipur being a tragic example. Ramesh also questioned whether the prime minister had “outsourced” the peace appeal to the RSS, an organization that he claimed had played a significant role in shaping Modi’s political beliefs.

The escalating violence in Manipur continues to be a matter of concern, prompting calls for swift action from various quarters. The RSS’s appeal for peace highlights the need for dialogue and cooperation to address the root causes of the crisis and restore stability to the region. The demand for the prime minister’s intervention grows louder as the opposition questions his silence on the matter.

In recent developments, political figures in Maharashtra have advocated for the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb, situated in Khuldabad, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. Udayanraje Bhosale, a descendant of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament, labeled Aurangzeb a “thief and looter,” urging authorities to demolish the tomb.

Maharashtra CM also in favor of Aurangzeb’s Tomb Removal

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis echoed this sentiment, expressing support for the tomb’s removal but emphasizing adherence to legal protocols. He noted that the site is under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), a designation made during a previous Congress-led administration. Fadnavis stated, “We all also want the same thing, but you need to do it within the framework of the law, because it is a protected site.”

In response to these calls, Maharashtra police have heightened security measures around the tomb to prevent potential unrest. The site is now under increased surveillance, with visitors required to present identification and adhere to stricter protocols.

This controversy underscores ongoing debates about historical narratives and cultural heritage in India, reflecting the complexities of addressing historical figures’ legacies within contemporary society.
