Bilkis Bano expressed her profound sense of justice following the Supreme Court’s decision on Monday to nullify the remission granted to 11 men convicted of raping her and murdering seven members of her family during the 2002 riots in Gujarat.

In addition to overturning the Gujarat government’s remission grant, the apex court criticized the state government’s order as “stereotyped” and lacking thoughtful consideration.

Through her attorney, Shobha Gupta, Bano conveyed her gratitude to the Supreme Court for the ruling, declaring that “today is truly the New Year for me.”

“I have shed tears of relief. For the first time in over a year and a half, I have smiled. I embraced my children. It feels as if a mountain-sized stone has been lifted from my chest, and I can breathe again,” Bano expressed.

Describing the verdict as the embodiment of justice, she thanked the honorable Supreme Court for providing her, her children, and women everywhere with vindication and hope in the promise of equal justice.

Accusing the Gujarat government of abusing its power, the Supreme Court ordered the 11 men to return to jail within two weeks.

In her statement, Bano acknowledged that journeys like hers are never undertaken alone.

“By my side, I have had my husband and children, friends who offered love during a time of hate, and an exceptional lawyer, Advocate Shobha Gupta, who has steadfastly walked with me for over two decades, never allowing me to lose hope in the pursuit of justice,” she stated.

Reflecting on the events from a year and a half ago when the individuals responsible for her family’s devastation were released early, Bano recalled feeling a depletion of courage until an outpouring of “a million solidarities” came her way.

“Thousands of ordinary people and women of India rallied around me. They stood up for me, spoke on my behalf, and filed PIL petitions in the Supreme Court. From all corners, 6,000 people, along with 8,500 from Mumbai, wrote appeals, and 10,000 penned an Open Letter, joined by 40,000 from 29 districts of Karnataka,” she acknowledged.

Expressing gratitude to these supporters for their precious solidarity and strength, Bano emphasized that they provided her with the determination to fight not only for herself but for every woman in India.

As she absorbs the profound implications of the verdict for her life and her children’s lives, Bano’s heartfelt wish is for the rule of law to prevail above all else, ensuring equality before the law for all.

the Opposition BJP has strongly criticized the Congress government for the blast at Rameshwaram Cafe in Bengaluru, attributing it to what they term as “appeasement politics.” They have called for a thorough investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), highlighting their concerns over the safety of citizens.

Bengaluru Rameshwaram Cafe Blast

Prominent BJP leaders have been vocal in linking the blast with what they perceive as the Congress’ support from minority communities. State president B Y Vijayendra pointed out the alleged “My Brother” policy of the Congress, referring to Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar’s reported remarks addressing the accused of the Mangaluru cooker blast as “my brother.” Vijayendra emphasized that such politics of minority appeasement is endangering the safety of citizens.

The BJP leaders further cited a series of incidents that they claim occurred under the Congress regime, including the targeting of Hindu homes during Tipu Jayanti celebrations and the raising of pro-Pakistan slogans inside the Vidhana Soudha. They assert that the blast at Rameshwaram cafe is an extension of this trend, linking it to the earlier incident of “Pakistan Zindabad” slogans being raised.

Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka condemned the Congress’ appeasement politics, alleging that it promotes a mentality of safeguarding irrespective of actions. He urged against turning Bengaluru into “Bomb Bengaluru” and called for responsible governance.

Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya criticized the Congress government’s handling of the situation, questioning their preemptive narratives and vote-bank compulsions. He urged for a fair investigation without biases.

BJP national general secretary (organisation) B L Santhosh lamented the consequences faced by Bengaluru and Karnataka due to what he perceives as the extreme appeasement policies of the elected government.

In conclusion, the BJP’s stance on the Bengaluru blast underscores their concerns regarding the alleged appeasement politics of the Congress. They advocate for a transparent investigation to ensure the safety and security of citizens, emphasizing the need for accountable governance.

Business owners and operators in Bengaluru are urged to take prompt action to ensure their nameplates meet the mandated language requirements.
