Mumbai: Thousands of farmers from Maharashtra are marching towards Mumbai to demand various measures from the government to address their grievances. Organized by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the march started from Dindori in Nashik district and is expected to cover 200 kilometers before reaching Mumbai. Along with farmers, the march also includes workers from the unorganized sector and members of tribal communities.

The farmers’ demands are numerous and include an immediate financial relief of ₹ 600 per quintal for onion growers who have been severely impacted by a fall in prices. The farmers are also demanding uninterrupted electricity supply for 12 hours, a waiver of agricultural loans, steps to arrest the slide in the prices of soybean, cotton, and tur, and immediate relief to farmers affected by recent unseasonal rains and other natural calamities. Additionally, those in the procession are also demanding the implementation of the Old Pension Scheme for state government employees who have joined service post-2005.

The state government has reached out to the protesting farmers, and two cabinet ministers, Dada Bhuse and Atul Save, are scheduled to meet them on their way to Mumbai. While a meeting was scheduled earlier between representatives of the farmers and the state government, it could not take place. The farmers are now demanding that government representatives come and meet them.

Leader of the Opposition Ajit Pawar and CPM MLA Vinod Nikole have urged the government to talk to the farmers. In response, Minister Bhuse said that they will hold a meeting and hopes to reach an understanding with the farmers. Speaking to NDTV, Mr Bhuse said, “They have 14 demands. The government will address them to the extent possible under the ambit of law.”

The ongoing foot march by the farmers is similar to the 2018 ‘Kisan Long March’ from Nashik to Mumbai, also organized by the Left parties, which saw the participation of thousands of farmers. At that time, the farmers had demanded a loan waiver and transfer of forest land to tribal farmers tilling it for years. Once the protest reached Mumbai, then Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had accepted the farmers’ demands.

The demands of the farmers highlight the various challenges that they face, from falling prices to the impact of natural calamities on their livelihoods. It is imperative for the government to address these challenges and come up with measures that can provide much-needed relief to farmers. It is hoped that the ongoing protests will serve as a wake-up call for the government and spur them into taking action to address the grievances of farmers in Maharashtra and across the country.

The Indian government’s recent decision to extend the deadline for linking Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar card is a significant move that impacts taxpayers across the country. The new deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar has been extended to June 30, 2023, as announced by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). Here are some key points to consider in this regard:

Importance of linking PAN with Aadhaar: Linking PAN with Aadhaar is a crucial step towards curbing tax evasion and ensuring transparency in financial transactions. It helps to establish the identity of the taxpayer and ensure that their tax records are accurate and up-to-date.

Deadline extension: The recent decision by the government to extend the deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar is a relief for taxpayers who were struggling to meet the previous deadline. This extension provides more time for taxpayers to complete the linking process without any undue pressure.

Consequences of non-compliance: Failure to link PAN with Aadhaar can lead to the inactivation of the PAN card. This means that the taxpayer will not be able to use the PAN for filing tax returns, opening bank accounts, or conducting any financial transactions that require PAN authentication.

Notification: The CBDT has announced that a notification will be issued separately to provide more information about the new deadline and the linking process. Taxpayers are advised to stay updated with the latest announcements and comply with the linking requirement to avoid any penalties or legal consequences.

Simplified process: The government has made the process of linking PAN with Aadhaar much simpler in recent years, with the introduction of an online facility for the same. Taxpayers can link their PAN with Aadhaar through the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal or through the UIDAI website. The process is straightforward and can be completed in a few easy steps.

In conclusion, the extension of the deadline for linking PAN with Aadhaar is a welcome move that provides relief to taxpayers across the country. Taxpayers are advised to take advantage of this extended deadline and complete the linking process as soon as possible to avoid any inconvenience or legal consequences.

Hassan: When Bajrang Dal and Vishva Hindu Parishad workers were protesting against Quran recitation in Belur of Hassan district, there was a scuffle between the two communities and the police resorted to baton charge to control the situation.

Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Vidhu Parishad workers staged a protest in the city demanding the cancellation of Quran recitation during Belur Channakesava Rathotsava. They protested by blocking the road. At this time, a young man from the Muslim community who came on a bike shouted the slogan of Quran Zindabad.

Infuriated by this, the Bajrang Dal activists took the young man to task. An argument took place between the protestors and the youth. Bajrang Dal activists chased the youth. The police resorted to lathi charge to control the situation. Also, the youth has been taken into custody and is being interrogated. However, there is a tense atmosphere in the place.

Hindu activists staged a protest and submitted a petition to the Tehsildar demanding that Quran should not be recited in the Hindu religious fair. The authorities have demanded that an order be issued by April 3 in this regard.

Last year, amid opposition from Hindu activists, recitation of the Quran was held at the Channakeshava fair. However, Hindu activists claim that recitation of the Quran before Hindu gods was forcibly added in 1932.
