The controversy over Tipu Sultan, the 18th-century ruler of Mysore, has once again taken centre stage in the state of Karnataka. Ahead of the state assembly elections, leaders from different political parties have made remarks about Tipu Sultan, triggering a row.

Recently, BJP MLA Basangouda Patil Yatnal made a controversial statement at a rally in Vijayapura. He said that descendants of Shivaji Maharaj should be the only ones to win in Bijapur and that people should not vote for Muslims, referring to Tipu Sultan’s supporters.

This statement came after BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel urged people to execute fervent supporters of Tipu Sultan and drive away his descendants. Kateel also claimed that the coming assembly election in the state was all about “Tipu versus Savarkar.”

Karnataka higher education minister C N Ashwath Narayan also stirred controversy by telling a rally in Mandya to “finish off” Congress leader Siddaramaiah the way “Vokkaliga chieftains Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda finished off Tipu Sultan.” After receiving backlash, Narayan offered a clarification, saying that his comparison between Tipu Sultan and Siddaramaiah were casual allusions and not meant to hurt anyone.

The descendants of Tipu Sultan have criticized both the BJP and the Congress for using Tipu Sultan’s name and trying to polarize votes ahead of the elections. Sahebzada Mansoor Ali, the seventh-generation descendant of Tipu Sultan, had said that while the BJP is trying to portray Tipu Sultan as a villain, the Congress is trying to portray him as a hero to gain the votes of his admirers.

The controversy over Tipu Sultan’s legacy is not new. In the past, the state government’s decision to celebrate Tipu Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Tipu Sultan, had also triggered protests and violence.

The latest controversy over Tipu Sultan’s legacy shows how divisive politics can be in India, with politicians using historical figures to gain votes and polarize communities. Such statements and actions can create tension and division, ultimately harming the social fabric of the country.

It is important for politicians to remember that historical figures belong to everyone and should not be used for political gains. Rather, they should work towards uniting communities and promoting harmony in the society.

a prominent doctor in Bengaluru‘s western region, Dr. Nikhil Gopalakrishnan, was apprehended by officials from the Central Crime Branch (CCB) on charges related to the procurement and consumption of hydro ganja. This arrest sheds light on the pervasive issue of substance abuse and its intricate networks in the city.

The CCB’s Anti Narcotics Wing (ANW) conducted a thorough investigation leading to the arrest of Dr. Gopalakrishnan. The authorities received concrete information suggesting his involvement in the acquisition of hydro ganja, which was reportedly dispatched to him via international mail from the Netherlands. Initial inquiries indicate that Dr. Gopalakrishnan purportedly utilized the contraband solely for personal consumption. However, the investigation is ongoing to ascertain the means through which he procured the substance and identify potential collaborators in his activities.

Dr. Gopalakrishnan’s origins trace back to Tamil Nadu, and he has been residing in the Yeshwantpur area of northern Bengaluru. This incident underscores the prevalence of substance abuse across various demographics within the city, irrespective of professional backgrounds or residential locations.

This arrest also draws attention to the broader issue of international connections in drug-related activities. Notably, the case of an international hacker known as Srikrishna, alias Sriki, who was previously apprehended for similar offenses involving hydro ganja procurement using cryptocurrencies earned through hacking government websites, exemplifies the transnational nature of such illicit operations.

In parallel investigations, the ANW has successfully apprehended three foreign nationals involved in drug peddling activities, seizing a substantial quantity of contraband valued at Rs 2.3 crore. The arrested individuals, identified as Chainasa Cyprilan Okoye and Kalu Chukwa from Nigeria, along with Emmanuel Kwasy from Ghana, highlight the diverse origins of individuals implicated in drug-related offenses within Bengaluru.

These arrests underscore the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in combating the proliferation of narcotics within the city. The peddlers, exploiting vulnerable segments of society such as college students, operate within a complex network that spans international borders. Efforts to dismantle these networks require diligent investigation and collaboration among various agencies.

The CCB’s seizure of MDMA crystals, ecstasy pills, and hydro ganja, along with the confiscation of mobile devices used by the suspects, reflects a concerted effort to disrupt the supply chain of illicit substances and bring perpetrators to justice.

As the investigations progress, it becomes imperative for authorities to not only apprehend individuals involved in drug-related activities but also implement preventive measures and rehabilitation programs to address the root causes of substance abuse in Bengaluru. The collective efforts of law enforcement agencies, coupled with community engagement initiatives, are essential in creating a safer and healthier environment for all residents of the city.
