Guwahati, Manipur: In a disturbing incident on Thursday, unidentified gunmen opened fire in Manipur, injuring two soldiers. The incident took place in N Boljang, Imphal West district during the early morning hours. The soldiers, who sustained injuries, were reported to be in stable condition and were expected to rejoin their colleagues at the company operating base soon.

The army’s Spear Corps took to Twitter, stating that the armed miscreants had resorted to unprovoked firing. It highlighted the troops’ calibrated response aimed at avoiding any collateral damage. In the ensuing response, the army recovered one INSAS light machine gun from the site. Additional army columns were deployed, and operations were underway to address the situation.

This marks the third such incident in which soldiers have been either injured or killed due to firing by miscreants and militants. Previously, on June 6, a Border Security Force jawan lost his life, while two Assam Rifles personnel were injured in a gun battle with militants in the Serou area of Kakching district in the Imphal valley. Additionally, on June 19, an army soldier sustained gunshot wounds during unprovoked firing by miscreants at Kanto Sabal in Imphal West district. With approximately 35,000 army and paramilitary personnel deployed in the state, the security situation remains a cause for concern.

On the same day, a joint team of the Assam Rifles and the Manipur police conducted a combing operation in Imphal East district, resulting in the recovery of a mortar bomb. These operations were launched recently to locate and retrieve looted weapons. Following the outbreak of violence on May 3, mobs had stolen over 4,000 weapons and a substantial amount of ammunition. Although nearly 1,000 weapons have been surrendered or recovered subsequently, efforts to retrieve the remaining arms are ongoing.

In a separate incident on Wednesday evening, three individuals, including two minors, were injured when a suspected improvised explosive device (IED) detonated in an SUV parked on a culvert along the Imphal-Churachandpur road near Kwakta in Bishnupur district. A tribal organization has alleged that the perpetrators aimed to block the road leading to Churachandpur, a district with a majority Kuki population in the hills, and incite tensions among the local “neutral” community. It should be noted that Kwakta has a predominantly Muslim population.

The authorities are working diligently to maintain law and order in Manipur, with ongoing operations targeting miscreants, militants, and the recovery of stolen weapons. The incidents highlight the challenges faced in ensuring peace and security in the region, necessitating a comprehensive approach to combat such acts of violence and maintain the well-being of both the security forces and the local populace.

Supreme Court to Review Kolkata Doctor’s Rape and Murder Case on March 17
Supreme Court of India

The Supreme Court of India, under the leadership of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, is scheduled to review the suo motu case concerning the rape and murder of a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on March 17.

In August of the previous year, the Court addressed the tragic incident, emphasizing the critical need for enhanced safety measures for medical professionals nationwide. The Bench appealed to protesting doctors to resume their duties, assuring them of protection against any punitive actions related to their participation in the protests.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been actively probing the case. In October, they filed the initial charge sheet against Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer associated with Kolkata Police, implicating him in the heinous crime. The CBI‘s investigation suggests a potential broader conspiracy, highlighting concerns about evidence tampering during the early stages when the Kolkata Police were overseeing the investigation. Subsequently, two additional arrests were made: Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the former Station House Officer of Tala Police Station. Both are accused of obstructing the investigation and tampering with evidence.

The upcoming hearing on March 17 will further address these developments, underscoring the Supreme Court‘s commitment to ensuring justice and reinforcing workplace safety for medical professionals across the country.

Note: For a comprehensive understanding, readers are encouraged to refer to official Supreme Court records and updates from the Central Bureau of Investigation.
