the Uttarakhand Cabinet has given its final approval to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), marking a significant milestone in the state’s legal landscape. This crucial decision, made during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami at his official residence on Sunday, paves the way for the formal presentation of the UCC in the upcoming special four-day session of the state Assembly, commencing on Monday.

The extensive four-volume final draft of the Uniform Civil Code, spanning a substantial 740 pages, was presented to Chief Minister Dhami on Friday. The comprehensive document was meticulously crafted by a distinguished five-member panel, with retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai at its helm.

The forthcoming special session of the Assembly has been exclusively convened to deliberate and potentially pass this groundbreaking legislation on the Uniform Civil Code. The UCC aims to establish a common set of laws applicable to all citizens, irrespective of their religious or personal affiliations, fostering a more inclusive and uniform legal framework.

The state cabinet’s endorsement of the Uniform Civil Code was not just a procedural formality but a critical prerequisite for its formal introduction in the legislative assembly. The approval sets the stage for thorough discussions and debates among lawmakers during the special session, emphasizing the significance of this legislative undertaking.

The Uniform Civil Code, a multifaceted legal framework encapsulated in the 740-page draft, reflects the collective efforts of legal experts, scholars, and policymakers. It addresses a diverse array of personal laws, seeking to streamline and harmonize them into a cohesive set of regulations applicable to all citizens. The goal is to ensure equal rights and justice for every individual, transcending the complexities of varied personal laws that have traditionally governed different religious and cultural communities.

Retired Supreme Court Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai, who led the panel responsible for crafting the UCC draft, expressed satisfaction with the culmination of their meticulous work. She emphasized the significance of this legislation in promoting social cohesion and upholding the principles of justice and equality.

The impending discussions in the state Assembly will likely touch upon the various facets of the Uniform Civil Code, inviting diverse perspectives from legislators representing different constituencies. The debates are expected to address concerns, critiques, and potential amendments to ensure that the final legislation is comprehensive, just, and in alignment with the principles of a democratic society.

The introduction of the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand is a testament to the state government’s commitment to legal reforms that transcend religious and cultural boundaries. By championing a more inclusive legal framework, the government aims to foster unity and ensure that all citizens have equal access to justice, irrespective of their personal beliefs or affiliations.

As the state Assembly prepares for the special session, all eyes will be on the deliberations surrounding the Uniform Civil Code. The outcome of these discussions is poised to have a lasting impact on the legal landscape of Uttarakhand, setting a precedent for other regions to consider similar reforms in the pursuit of a more just and equitable society.

the Opposition BJP has strongly criticized the Congress government for the blast at Rameshwaram Cafe in Bengaluru, attributing it to what they term as “appeasement politics.” They have called for a thorough investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), highlighting their concerns over the safety of citizens.

Bengaluru Rameshwaram Cafe Blast

Prominent BJP leaders have been vocal in linking the blast with what they perceive as the Congress’ support from minority communities. State president B Y Vijayendra pointed out the alleged “My Brother” policy of the Congress, referring to Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar’s reported remarks addressing the accused of the Mangaluru cooker blast as “my brother.” Vijayendra emphasized that such politics of minority appeasement is endangering the safety of citizens.

The BJP leaders further cited a series of incidents that they claim occurred under the Congress regime, including the targeting of Hindu homes during Tipu Jayanti celebrations and the raising of pro-Pakistan slogans inside the Vidhana Soudha. They assert that the blast at Rameshwaram cafe is an extension of this trend, linking it to the earlier incident of “Pakistan Zindabad” slogans being raised.

Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka condemned the Congress’ appeasement politics, alleging that it promotes a mentality of safeguarding irrespective of actions. He urged against turning Bengaluru into “Bomb Bengaluru” and called for responsible governance.

Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya criticized the Congress government’s handling of the situation, questioning their preemptive narratives and vote-bank compulsions. He urged for a fair investigation without biases.

BJP national general secretary (organisation) B L Santhosh lamented the consequences faced by Bengaluru and Karnataka due to what he perceives as the extreme appeasement policies of the elected government.

In conclusion, the BJP’s stance on the Bengaluru blast underscores their concerns regarding the alleged appeasement politics of the Congress. They advocate for a transparent investigation to ensure the safety and security of citizens, emphasizing the need for accountable governance.
