Bengaluru: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) announced on Sunday that it has achieved a significant milestone in its Chandrayaan-3 mission. The orbit of the mission’s lander module has been successfully reduced, positioning it for a soft landing on the Moon’s surface at 18:04 hours on August 23.

ISRO revealed that the lander module, comprising the ‘Vikram’ lander and the ‘Pragyan’ rover, will undergo internal checks to prepare for the planned soft landing. The touchdown, which was initially scheduled for 5:47 pm on August 23, has been adjusted to 18:04 hours, marking a delay of 17 minutes.

This achievement was made possible by the second and final deboosting operation, which effectively slowed down the lander module’s orbit to 25 km x 134 km. The module is now set to await the sunrise at the designated landing site, with the powered descent expected to commence at 17:45 hrs IST on August 23, 2023.

ISRO emphasized that the Chandrayaan-3 mission represents a remarkable milestone in India’s pursuit of space exploration. This accomplishment not only signifies progress in science, engineering, technology, and industry but also fosters national pride and unity.

The upcoming soft landing event will be broadcast live on August 23, starting from 17:27 Hrs IST, across multiple platforms, including the ISRO Website, its YouTube channel, ISRO’s Facebook page, and DD National TV channel.

ISRO commented on the significance of this achievement by stating, “The soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 is a monumental moment that not only fuels curiosity but also sparks a passion for exploration within the minds of our youth.” The organization further encouraged schools and educational institutions to actively promote the event among students and faculty and organize live streams on campuses.

On August 17, the lander module successfully separated from the propulsion module, following the mission’s launch on July 14. After separation, the lander underwent deboosting operations to position it in an orbit that enables a soft landing attempt on the Moon’s south polar region.

The mission’s success relies on careful execution as the lander module enters the powered braking phase at around 30 km altitude, using thrusters to descend towards the lunar surface. Upon reaching an altitude of about 100 m, the lander will scan the surface for obstacles before initiating the final descent for a soft landing.

Chandrayaan-3, a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2, aims to demonstrate end-to-end capability in safe landing and roving on the lunar surface. The mission objectives include achieving a safe and soft landing on the Moon, demonstrating the rover’s mobility, and conducting in-situ scientific experiments. The lander and rover carry scientific payloads for these experiments, contributing to India’s advancements in space exploration.

Supreme Court to Review Kolkata Doctor’s Rape and Murder Case on March 17
Supreme Court of India

The Supreme Court of India, under the leadership of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, is scheduled to review the suo motu case concerning the rape and murder of a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on March 17.

In August of the previous year, the Court addressed the tragic incident, emphasizing the critical need for enhanced safety measures for medical professionals nationwide. The Bench appealed to protesting doctors to resume their duties, assuring them of protection against any punitive actions related to their participation in the protests.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been actively probing the case. In October, they filed the initial charge sheet against Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer associated with Kolkata Police, implicating him in the heinous crime. The CBI‘s investigation suggests a potential broader conspiracy, highlighting concerns about evidence tampering during the early stages when the Kolkata Police were overseeing the investigation. Subsequently, two additional arrests were made: Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the former Station House Officer of Tala Police Station. Both are accused of obstructing the investigation and tampering with evidence.

The upcoming hearing on March 17 will further address these developments, underscoring the Supreme Court‘s commitment to ensuring justice and reinforcing workplace safety for medical professionals across the country.

Note: For a comprehensive understanding, readers are encouraged to refer to official Supreme Court records and updates from the Central Bureau of Investigation.
