New Delhi: India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, reiterated on Thursday that any expectation of normalizing ties with China is unfounded as long as the border situation in eastern Ladakh remains unresolved. Speaking at a press conference, Jaishankar emphasized that the “forward deployment” of troops was the primary issue hampering relations between the two countries.

While expressing India’s desire to improve its relations with China, Jaishankar emphasized that peace and tranquillity in the border areas are prerequisites for any progress. India has made it clear to China that until the border areas stabilize, the relationship between the two nations cannot move forward.

Jaishankar highlighted India’s steadfastness in dealing with border issues, stating that India does not succumb to coercion, inducements, or false narratives. He cited India’s opposition to China’s Belt and Road Initiative and its approach to the situation along the Northern border as examples.

The Indian and Chinese troops have been locked in a standoff in certain friction points in eastern Ladakh for over three years, despite disengagement in several areas following extensive diplomatic and military talks.

Jaishankar emphasized the necessity for both sides to find ways to disengage their troops, pointing out that the current impasse is not in China’s interests either.

Responding to queries about Chinese occupation of Indian territory, Jaishankar clarified that the issue lies in the “forward deployment of troops.”

India’s relationship with China has significantly deteriorated since the intense clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020, marking one of the most serious military conflicts between the two nations in decades.

Jaishankar reiterated that India seeks to improve relations with China but stressed that this can only happen when there is peace and adherence to agreements in the border areas. He confirmed that talks between both countries are ongoing to resolve the border row.

While India’s ties with leading countries and key groupings are on the upswing, Jaishankar noted that the relationship with China remains an obstacle. He pointed out that China’s decision to break agreements and deploy forces to the border areas in 2020 has hindered progress and peace.

The eastern Ladakh border standoff initially erupted following a violent clash in the Pangong Lake area. Through a series of military and diplomatic talks, the disengagement process was completed in 2021 on the north and south banks of Pangong Lake and in the Gogra area.

India continues to emphasize the need for peace and tranquillity in the border regions for the normalization of ties with China, indicating that resolution of the border situation remains pivotal for any progress in the bilateral relationship.

In recent developments, political figures in Maharashtra have advocated for the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb, situated in Khuldabad, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. Udayanraje Bhosale, a descendant of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament, labeled Aurangzeb a “thief and looter,” urging authorities to demolish the tomb.

Maharashtra CM also in favor of Aurangzeb’s Tomb Removal

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis echoed this sentiment, expressing support for the tomb’s removal but emphasizing adherence to legal protocols. He noted that the site is under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), a designation made during a previous Congress-led administration. Fadnavis stated, “We all also want the same thing, but you need to do it within the framework of the law, because it is a protected site.”

In response to these calls, Maharashtra police have heightened security measures around the tomb to prevent potential unrest. The site is now under increased surveillance, with visitors required to present identification and adhere to stricter protocols.

This controversy underscores ongoing debates about historical narratives and cultural heritage in India, reflecting the complexities of addressing historical figures’ legacies within contemporary society.
