Srinagar: political parties in Kashmir called for the revocation of the ban on Muharram processions, asserting that the restriction was unjustified, considering the government’s claims of restored normalcy in the valley and the permission granted to other religious processions.

Muharram processions have remained prohibited in the region since the outbreak of militancy in the 1990s.

Leading the call for lifting the ban, Tanvir Sadiq, the chief spokesperson of the National Conference, questioned the rationale behind restricting Muharram processions while allowing other religious observances to take place. “Muharram processions should be allowed,” he emphasized. “If the Lieutenant Governor and Home Minister of the country are stating that the situation in Jammu and Kashmir has improved, then there is no valid reason to halt processions on the 8th and 9th days of Muharram through the traditional routes.”

Sadiq drew attention to the permissions granted for the Amarnath Yatra and Janmashtami processions and raised the question of why Muharram processions were being treated differently. “If you are allowing the Amarnath Yatra and Janmashtami processions through the interiors of Srinagar city and Mela Kheer Bhawani, then why not Muharram processions?” he inquired. “Events like G20 have taken place in Srinagar, and the government itself attests to the improved situation in Jammu and Kashmir since 2019. So, why stop Muharram processions?”

Imran Reza Ansari, the secretary general of the People’s Conference, asserted that permitting Muharram processions could serve as a confidence-building measure. “The government acknowledges that the situation in Kashmir appears peaceful and incident-free for the last five-six years. This is the opportune moment, and allowing the processions would foster confidence,” he stated. He further suggested specific routes for the processions, from Guru Bazar to Dal Gate and from Abi Guzar to Zadibal on the 10th day of Muharram.

Ansari pointed out that the Muslim community did not seek the lifting of the ban when the situation in the Valley was unfavorable. However, given the improved conditions, “all Shia organizations have been repeatedly and jointly asking the government of Jammu and Kashmir to allow the processions,” he asserted.

He stressed that Muharram was not merely a festival but a solemn month of mourning for all Muslims, free from any political or separatist motives. “It is just purely about spirituality and faith,” Ansari added, urging the government to reconsider the ban.

The traditional Muharram procession, commemorating the eighth and tenth days of the 10-day mourning period, had historically passed through Abi Guzar and the interior areas of the city. However, it was banned following the rise of militancy in the valley, with authorities expressing concerns that religious gatherings were being exploited to propagate separatist sentiments.

Supreme Court to Review Kolkata Doctor’s Rape and Murder Case on March 17
Supreme Court of India

The Supreme Court of India, under the leadership of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, is scheduled to review the suo motu case concerning the rape and murder of a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on March 17.

In August of the previous year, the Court addressed the tragic incident, emphasizing the critical need for enhanced safety measures for medical professionals nationwide. The Bench appealed to protesting doctors to resume their duties, assuring them of protection against any punitive actions related to their participation in the protests.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been actively probing the case. In October, they filed the initial charge sheet against Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer associated with Kolkata Police, implicating him in the heinous crime. The CBI‘s investigation suggests a potential broader conspiracy, highlighting concerns about evidence tampering during the early stages when the Kolkata Police were overseeing the investigation. Subsequently, two additional arrests were made: Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the former Station House Officer of Tala Police Station. Both are accused of obstructing the investigation and tampering with evidence.

The upcoming hearing on March 17 will further address these developments, underscoring the Supreme Court‘s commitment to ensuring justice and reinforcing workplace safety for medical professionals across the country.

Note: For a comprehensive understanding, readers are encouraged to refer to official Supreme Court records and updates from the Central Bureau of Investigation.
