Ahmedabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cautionary warning to fishermen along Gujarat’s coast, urging them to avoid venturing into the sea over the next five days until July 26. The warning comes as heavy rainfall continues to batter various parts of the state, resulting in devastating floods and posing a significant threat to public safety.

In one tragic incident, a 16-year-old boy and his father from Belimora faced a perilous situation while travelling to write the boy’s exam. The young boy was swept away by a powerful flow of water, while his father managed to survive. Search and rescue operations have been initiated by a fire team to find the missing boy.

Numerous regions across Gujarat have been severely affected by the incessant rains. On Saturday, 45 talukas reported heavy rainfall, with Navsari district recording a staggering 13 inches of rainfall. Girnar Hill in Junagadh received approximately 14 inches of rain, resulting in the flooding of nearby areas and causing cars to float in several locations. Desperate residents were forced to seek refuge on rooftops to stay safe.

The Junagadh district, particularly Saurashtra, witnessed roads turning into rivers due to the continuous downpour. The water level in the Kalwa River surged significantly due to excessive rainfall in Girnar and Datar mountains, leading to the inundation of houses and the washing away of cattle and vehicles.

In light of the hazardous weather conditions, Ravi Teja Wasam Shetty, the Junagadh district police chief, has issued a plea to the public, urging them to remain indoors and prioritize their safety.

The adverse weather situation is not limited to Junagadh; other regions in Gujarat are also grappling with heavy rainfall and flooding. The Amreli district in Saurashtra experienced flooding, with the ST bus stand and Rajkot Road submerged under water. In Navsari, which is in south Gujarat, the rainfall reached nearly 13 inches as of 12 pm on Saturday, affecting both urban and rural areas.

The impact of the heavy rains is also evident on transportation, with the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway 48 in Navsari witnessing heavy traffic disruptions.

The districts of Patan and Banaskantha have not been spared from the torrential rains either, with several low-lying areas in Palanpur submerged due to the heavy downpour.

To provide early warnings to residents, the IMD has issued color-coded alerts for various regions in Gujarat. Valsad, Bhavnagar, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Daman, Dadra Nagar Haveli have been placed under a ‘red alert,’ while ‘orange alert’ has been issued for Ahmedabad, Anand, Bharuch, Banaskantha, Sabarkantha, Amreli, Jamnagar, Gir Somnath, and Kutch. Surendranagar, Dahod, Junagadh, Rajkot, Botad, Vadodara, Surat, Navsari have been placed under a ‘yellow’ alert. The weather alerts will remain in effect until July 24.

As the situation unfolds, authorities and rescue teams are working tirelessly to mitigate the impact of the heavy rains and floods, while citizens are urged to exercise extreme caution and prioritize their safety during this critical period.

Supreme Court to Review Kolkata Doctor’s Rape and Murder Case on March 17
Supreme Court of India

The Supreme Court of India, under the leadership of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, is scheduled to review the suo motu case concerning the rape and murder of a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on March 17.

In August of the previous year, the Court addressed the tragic incident, emphasizing the critical need for enhanced safety measures for medical professionals nationwide. The Bench appealed to protesting doctors to resume their duties, assuring them of protection against any punitive actions related to their participation in the protests.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been actively probing the case. In October, they filed the initial charge sheet against Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer associated with Kolkata Police, implicating him in the heinous crime. The CBI‘s investigation suggests a potential broader conspiracy, highlighting concerns about evidence tampering during the early stages when the Kolkata Police were overseeing the investigation. Subsequently, two additional arrests were made: Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the former Station House Officer of Tala Police Station. Both are accused of obstructing the investigation and tampering with evidence.

The upcoming hearing on March 17 will further address these developments, underscoring the Supreme Court‘s commitment to ensuring justice and reinforcing workplace safety for medical professionals across the country.

Note: For a comprehensive understanding, readers are encouraged to refer to official Supreme Court records and updates from the Central Bureau of Investigation.
