Lucknow: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has recently taken a significant step in addressing the alleged sexual exploitation of 13 girl students by a computer instructor at a government school in Shahjahanpur district, Uttar Pradesh. Expressing concern over the incident, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, urging them to provide a detailed report on the matter. The commission has emphasized the need for swift action against the perpetrators, as well as the provision of support and counseling to the affected students.

The incident came to light when the victims, aged between 12 and 16 years, bravely confided in their parents about the harrowing experiences they had endured at the hands of the computer instructor. Subsequently, the NHRC took suo motu cognizance of the media reports surrounding the case, expressing grave concern over the potential violation of the human rights of the minor victims.

In response to the incident, the authorities have taken certain measures. The perpetrator, Mohammad Ali, has been apprehended and arrested by the police. However, the state education department authorities have also suspended the school principal and an assistant teacher, citing their failure to act promptly on the case. This step highlights the importance of the education system’s role in protecting students and preventing such incidents from occurring.

The NHRC, being committed to upholding human rights, has requested a detailed report from the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police within a stipulated timeframe of six weeks. The report should include information on the actions taken against the culprits, the progress of the investigation, and the current status of compensation provided to the victims and their families. Additionally, the commission has expressed concern about the psychological well-being of the affected students, urging the authorities to provide them with necessary counseling and support.

Recognizing the importance of preventing similar incidents, the NHRC has emphasized the role of the state government in ensuring that clear guidelines are issued to all schools under its jurisdiction. These guidelines should prioritize the prompt reporting of any untoward incidents to the police and discourage attempts to conceal facts. By taking proactive measures, the commission aims to ensure that perpetrators are swiftly apprehended, thereby safeguarding the rights and well-being of students.

The NHRC’s intervention in the case of the alleged sexual exploitation of girl students at a government school in Shahjahanpur district underscores the significance of protecting human rights, particularly those of vulnerable individuals such as minors. The commission’s demands for a comprehensive report, actions against the culprits, and support for the victims reflect its commitment to providing justice and ensuring a safe environment for all students. Through its proactive approach, the NHRC seeks to create awareness and prevent future incidents of a similar nature, emphasizing the responsibility of all stakeholders involved in the education system.

In recent developments, political figures in Maharashtra have advocated for the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb, situated in Khuldabad, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. Udayanraje Bhosale, a descendant of Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament, labeled Aurangzeb a “thief and looter,” urging authorities to demolish the tomb.

Maharashtra CM also in favor of Aurangzeb’s Tomb Removal

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis echoed this sentiment, expressing support for the tomb’s removal but emphasizing adherence to legal protocols. He noted that the site is under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), a designation made during a previous Congress-led administration. Fadnavis stated, “We all also want the same thing, but you need to do it within the framework of the law, because it is a protected site.”

In response to these calls, Maharashtra police have heightened security measures around the tomb to prevent potential unrest. The site is now under increased surveillance, with visitors required to present identification and adhere to stricter protocols.

This controversy underscores ongoing debates about historical narratives and cultural heritage in India, reflecting the complexities of addressing historical figures’ legacies within contemporary society.
