Jammu: In a tense turn of events, over 200 Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, who have been detained at a “holding centre” in Hiranagar sub-jail for more than two years, staged a protest demanding their release. The demonstration, which occurred on Tuesday, led to clashes with the guards stationed at the facility, as per official sources.

The holding centre, which was established on March 5, 2021, currently houses a total of 271 Rohingyas, including 74 women and 70 children. These refugees were detained as part of an initiative to address the issue of illegal immigrants residing in Jammu.

According to a senior police officer, the protest was not an isolated incident, as the Rohingyas have been holding demonstrations for the past month seeking their release from the holding centre. However, the situation escalated on this particular day when a woman fell sick in the morning, prompting the protest.

Upon learning of the protest, senior police and jail officials rushed to the scene to restore order and maintain calm within the facility. Mild force was reportedly used by the police to disperse the protesters who had gathered near the main gate.

Notably, in May, the Rohingyas had previously initiated an indefinite hunger strike to protest their prolonged detention at the centre. The strike was later called off after assurances from senior police and jail officials that the matter had been brought to the attention of the Central government. They were told that upon receiving the necessary orders, they would be either released or deported to their country of origin.

The Rohingyas, a Muslim minority group that speaks a Bengali dialect, fled persecution in Myanmar and entered India illegally through Bangladesh. Many of them found refuge in Jammu and other parts of the country.

However, their presence has been a subject of controversy, with some political parties and social organizations in Jammu urging the Central government to deport them, along with Bangladeshi nationals. These groups allege that the increasing population of Rohingyas and Bangladeshi nationals in the region is a “conspiracy to alter the demographic character” and poses a “threat to peace.”

According to government data, more than 13,700 foreigners, including Rohingya Muslims and Bangladeshi nationals, have settled in Jammu and Samba districts of Jammu and Kashmir. The population of these foreign nationals has increased by over 6,000 between 2008 and 2016.

The situation remains tense as authorities continue to address the grievances of the detained Rohingyas while also considering the broader implications of their presence in the region.

Supreme Court to Review Kolkata Doctor’s Rape and Murder Case on March 17
Supreme Court of India

The Supreme Court of India, under the leadership of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, is scheduled to review the suo motu case concerning the rape and murder of a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on March 17.

In August of the previous year, the Court addressed the tragic incident, emphasizing the critical need for enhanced safety measures for medical professionals nationwide. The Bench appealed to protesting doctors to resume their duties, assuring them of protection against any punitive actions related to their participation in the protests.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been actively probing the case. In October, they filed the initial charge sheet against Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer associated with Kolkata Police, implicating him in the heinous crime. The CBI‘s investigation suggests a potential broader conspiracy, highlighting concerns about evidence tampering during the early stages when the Kolkata Police were overseeing the investigation. Subsequently, two additional arrests were made: Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the former Station House Officer of Tala Police Station. Both are accused of obstructing the investigation and tampering with evidence.

The upcoming hearing on March 17 will further address these developments, underscoring the Supreme Court‘s commitment to ensuring justice and reinforcing workplace safety for medical professionals across the country.

Note: For a comprehensive understanding, readers are encouraged to refer to official Supreme Court records and updates from the Central Bureau of Investigation.
