Ballari: Students of a government-run hostel for Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe communities in the Indian state of Karnataka were evicted after they staged a protest over the “poor quality of food” served at the hostel. The incident has caused outrage against the district administration.

According to sources, residents of the hostel in Ballari town complained to their warden Shivappa on Wednesday after they were served poor-quality chicken curry. The warden said he would look into the matter, but the students were not satisfied with his response.

The students then decided to take matters into their own hands by carrying a bucket full of chicken curry to the residence of Ballari District Commissioner Pavan Kumar Malapati on Wednesday night and protested. The DC asked them to return, but the students continued with their agitation until the local police intervened.

The next day, at least 25 students were evicted from the hostel allegedly as a result of the protest at the DC’s residence. The warden Shivappa stated that more students will be removed from the hostel soon. “We will allow them to stay in the hostel once they bring their parents and give a letter of apology,” he added.

Karnataka Minister for Tribal Welfare B Sriramulu, who is in charge of Ballari district, also criticized the students, stating that “if there are issues, they should write a letter to the DC. We will ensure action is initiated, but going in front of the DC’s residence late at night and staging a protest cannot be justified.”

Meanwhile, former Chief Minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah has demanded the suspension of the Ballari DC for asking the college students to vacate the hostel. He said, “The DC should have appreciated the students for highlighting the issues at the hostel. Ordering them to be evicted from the hostel is inhumane. He should be suspended.”

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for accountability from various politicians, civil society groups, and members of the public. Many have expressed concern about the treatment of the students, who were allegedly evicted for raising concerns about poor quality food.

The incident also highlights the larger issue of poor living conditions and lack of basic amenities in government-run hostels for marginalized communities. This is not the first time that students from such hostels have raised concerns about poor food, inadequate facilities, and lack of basic amenities.

The government and the district administration have come under fire for their handling of the situation and their response to the students’ concerns. Many have called for an investigation into the incident and for action to be taken to ensure that the rights and needs of marginalized communities are protected and upheld.

In conclusion, the eviction of students from the government-run hostel in Ballari district has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for accountability. The incident highlights the larger issue of poor living conditions and lack of basic amenities in government-run hostels for marginalized communities, and the need for the government to take action to ensure that their rights and needs are protected and upheld.

Bengaluru: After the collapse of the BJP government in Karnataka, the Congress government came into existence under the leadership of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. After suffering a big defeat in the assembly elections, there is a lot of discussion about who will be the leader of the opposition in the BJP. It is also seen that there is a huge competition going on in the state BJP to get the position of the leader of the opposition.

Meanwhile, it is known that former Chief Minister Basavaraja Bommai met senior BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa and discussed the political developments in the state including the position of the Leader of the Opposition.

Already the national leaders of the BJP are holding informal meetings with the BJP MLAs to gather opinion. However, BJP sources said that the final decision is likely to be taken before the budget session in July. However, the increased competition for the position of the opposition leader has caused headaches for the BJP leaders.

Former chief minister Basavaraj Bommai, former DCM R Ashok, former minister Sunil Kumar and senior MLA Basanagowda Patil Yatnal are leading in the race for the post of Leader of Opposition.

As the position of Leader of Opposition is critical, BJP is taking a measured decision. Because the position of the opposition leader is important for the BJP to bring the failures and missteps of the Congress government before the people and use every available opportunity successfully.

Sources said that the leaders have decided to choose a similar leader in the BJP as there are many senior MLAs in the Congress to effectively counter the opposition attack.
