Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the launch of the ‘Pradhan Mantri Suryoday Yojana’ during her interim Budget speech on Thursday. The scheme, introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier in January, aims to install rooftop solar systems in one crore households across the nation.

The Finance Minister highlighted that the Pradhan Mantri Suryoday Yojana would provide up to 300 units of free electricity every month to one crore families, resulting in an annual savings of Rs 15,000 to Rs 18,000. The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s commitment made on the historic day of the consecration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

Sitharaman emphasized the multiple benefits of the scheme, stating that households could not only save on their electricity bills but also have the opportunity to sell surplus energy to distribution companies. Additionally, the scheme is expected to create entrepreneurship opportunities for vendors involved in the supply and installation of solar panels, as well as generate employment for youth with technical skills in manufacturing, installation, and maintenance.

Addressing India’s commitment to achieving ‘net-zero’ by 2070, the Finance Minister announced viability gap funding for harnessing offshore wind energy. The funding will be provided for the initial capacity of 1 GW, contributing to the country’s goal of having 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030, with 50 percent of the installed power generation capacity from non-fossil fuel sources.

India currently stands as the fourth-largest country in terms of renewable energy installed capacity, with significant contributions from solar and wind power. President Droupadi Murmu highlighted in her joint address to the Members of Parliament that the non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity has increased from 81 GW to 188 GW in the last ten years.

The announcement has been well-received by industry experts. Ashwani Sehgal, President of the Indian Solar Manufacturers’ Association, sees it as a positive step that opens up a robust 30 GW opportunity for solar manufacturers, fostering local job creation and environmental sustainability.

Anujesh Dwivedi, Partner at Deloitte India, emphasized the transformative impact of empowering one crore households with rooftop solar installations. He stated that the initiative addresses the financial viability and subsidy dependence issues of distribution companies, marking a significant stride towards sustainability and economic efficiency.

Kush Singh, CEO of Essar Power, commended the government’s commitment to providing free rooftop solar electricity, describing it as a strategic move towards resource-efficient economic growth that ensures energy security and stimulates entrepreneurship and employment.

Sumant Sinha, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of ReNew, lauded the continued priority given to the rapid growth of the green energy sector. He believes that the announcements on viability gap funding for offshore wind energy and allocations for solar rooftop projects will support the overall development of the industry.

the Opposition BJP has strongly criticized the Congress government for the blast at Rameshwaram Cafe in Bengaluru, attributing it to what they term as “appeasement politics.” They have called for a thorough investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), highlighting their concerns over the safety of citizens.

Bengaluru Rameshwaram Cafe Blast

Prominent BJP leaders have been vocal in linking the blast with what they perceive as the Congress’ support from minority communities. State president B Y Vijayendra pointed out the alleged “My Brother” policy of the Congress, referring to Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar’s reported remarks addressing the accused of the Mangaluru cooker blast as “my brother.” Vijayendra emphasized that such politics of minority appeasement is endangering the safety of citizens.

The BJP leaders further cited a series of incidents that they claim occurred under the Congress regime, including the targeting of Hindu homes during Tipu Jayanti celebrations and the raising of pro-Pakistan slogans inside the Vidhana Soudha. They assert that the blast at Rameshwaram cafe is an extension of this trend, linking it to the earlier incident of “Pakistan Zindabad” slogans being raised.

Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka condemned the Congress’ appeasement politics, alleging that it promotes a mentality of safeguarding irrespective of actions. He urged against turning Bengaluru into “Bomb Bengaluru” and called for responsible governance.

Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya criticized the Congress government’s handling of the situation, questioning their preemptive narratives and vote-bank compulsions. He urged for a fair investigation without biases.

BJP national general secretary (organisation) B L Santhosh lamented the consequences faced by Bengaluru and Karnataka due to what he perceives as the extreme appeasement policies of the elected government.

In conclusion, the BJP’s stance on the Bengaluru blast underscores their concerns regarding the alleged appeasement politics of the Congress. They advocate for a transparent investigation to ensure the safety and security of citizens, emphasizing the need for accountable governance.

Business owners and operators in Bengaluru are urged to take prompt action to ensure their nameplates meet the mandated language requirements.
