Gurugram: The district administration of Haryana’s Nuh continued its demolition drive on Saturday morning, resulting in the destruction of houses and shops belonging to local residents. The move comes as authorities aim to clear illegal constructions on approximately 2.6 acres of land surrounding Nalhar Medical College in the state.

As part of the operation, around 15 other temporary structures were also torn down, with the police actively participating in the drive. Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Ashwani Kumar stated that some of the structures’ owners were allegedly involved in the recent violence that occurred during the Braj Mandal religious yatra. Despite officials’ previous statements that the demolition was unrelated to communal violence, SDM Ashwani Kumar asserted that the drive would continue.

The demolition drive began from Adbar Chowk and is set to continue until Tiranga Chowk, targeting structures that were deemed unauthorized by the authorities.

The actions taken by the district administration have garnered criticism from various quarters, with local MLA and deputy leader of the Congress Legislature Party, Aftab Ahmed, leading the protest against the demolitions. In a statement, Ahmed expressed concern that not only the houses of the poor were being destroyed but also the faith and trust of the common people. He accused the government of resorting to repressive policies to hide administrative failures, citing that villagers claimed the authorities gave demolition notices in backdated form, a claim that raises questions about the transparency and fairness of the process.

The recent clashes in Nuh have added to the tension in the region. Six people, including two home guards and a cleric, lost their lives during the confrontations that took place in the Muslim-dominated area when a Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) procession or the Braj Mandal Yatra was attacked by mobs on a Monday.

Meanwhile, the curfew imposed in Nuh has been partially relaxed, allowing residents to purchase essential goods from 12 noon to 3 pm. The authorities remain vigilant as the situation continues to evolve.

Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij had earlier indicated that the demolitions were part of the government’s action against those involved in the communal clashes. However, questions persist about the timing and execution of the demolition drive, given the ongoing tensions in the region.

The district administration’s actions have raised concerns among the affected communities and have drawn attention to the need for transparent and equitable decision-making in addressing illegal constructions and social unrest. As the situation unfolds, authorities must ensure that the rights of all citizens are protected, and efforts should be made to restore harmony and trust among the affected communities in Nuh.

Supreme Court to Review Kolkata Doctor’s Rape and Murder Case on March 17
Supreme Court of India

The Supreme Court of India, under the leadership of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, is scheduled to review the suo motu case concerning the rape and murder of a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on March 17.

In August of the previous year, the Court addressed the tragic incident, emphasizing the critical need for enhanced safety measures for medical professionals nationwide. The Bench appealed to protesting doctors to resume their duties, assuring them of protection against any punitive actions related to their participation in the protests.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been actively probing the case. In October, they filed the initial charge sheet against Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer associated with Kolkata Police, implicating him in the heinous crime. The CBI‘s investigation suggests a potential broader conspiracy, highlighting concerns about evidence tampering during the early stages when the Kolkata Police were overseeing the investigation. Subsequently, two additional arrests were made: Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, the former Station House Officer of Tala Police Station. Both are accused of obstructing the investigation and tampering with evidence.

The upcoming hearing on March 17 will further address these developments, underscoring the Supreme Court‘s commitment to ensuring justice and reinforcing workplace safety for medical professionals across the country.

Note: For a comprehensive understanding, readers are encouraged to refer to official Supreme Court records and updates from the Central Bureau of Investigation.
